Reverend Clyde Brooks, a noted scholar in education, business, and theology, worked with Dr. King when he was in Chicago, residing in a run down apartment on the west side of Chicago to demonstrate the need for meaningful affordable housing. Rev. Brooks was deeply inspired by Dr. King and this close relationship served as the stimulus for him to launch an annual celebration of the life, work, and birthday of Dr. King. The dinner started in 1971 at what was then the Arlington Hilton Hotel in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Mayor Richard Hatcher was the speaker at this event. Since that time, speakers from around the nation and world have participated in the event. The dinner has served to honor individuals, businesses, and organizations who continued to promote the ideals held high by Dr. King.
Recently, a new thrust was added to this annual event. It moved the celebration of Dr. King from a totally "what is wrong with the world" mentality to including achievements that have occurred since the death of Dr. King. When Dr. King was last in Chicago in 1966, he was greatly criticized; racial hatred towards him and black people was at its highest peak in the history of Chicago. Few blacks were in professional sports. The City of Chicago was known as one of the most segregated cities in the world. However, today, Chicago is a different place. It is not a different place because of increased toleration by the people, rather because of people of different racial and cultural groups coming together for positive change. The change is due to economic and political power of African Americans and Hispanics. This change is best reflected in the Dr. King Dinner and Celebration when, in 2005, Ozzie Guillen, Manager of the Chicago White Sox, Dusty Baker, Manager of the Chicago Cubs, and Lovie Smith, Head Coach of the Chicago Bears served as the speakers and honorees.
Chicago is the only city in the United States with three minorities serving as heads of major league sports. They were not selected because they were minority rather because they became great despite hatred and racism. This is truly an achievement that Dr. King helped to bring about. Dr. King helped to surface the racial hatred that kept many African Americans from aspiring to greater heights. Under the theme of "King Achievers: Dreams Fulfilled", more than a thousand concerned community, business, government, and educational leaders and supporters gathered to help the Commission celebrate the greatness of a city.
